Your every message should seek either to inform or to become informed.

Teachers answer questions, defend or clarify assumptions, provide sources, and offer different interpretations about U.S. racialism. Most members perform both roles. Your every message should seek either to inform or to become informed. |
New members often fail to notice the last sentence above: “Your every message should seek either to inform or to become informed.” Instead, their posts (often one-liners) merely express their feelings about someone else's contribution, rather than adding anything new of their own.
Technically, such messages violate rule 1.2, but new members are exempt from rule 1.2. Many new members feel more comfortable contributing in such a modest fashion until developing the confidence (and interest) to jump in more aggressively. Site management looks at such posts as an intermediate stage after lurking but before full participation, and we encourage it as a transition practice.
Eventually, however, that “grace period” ends. Once someone has posted 50 messages, they will be encouraged to follow the last sentence of rule 1.2 from then on. Once they have posted 100 messages, they will be required to follow the last sentence of rule 1.2 or face suspension. |
